Orthodox Christian Women (OCW)

THE ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN WOMEN OF METRO-DETROIT (OCW) was officially founded in February of 1993, after many months of preparatory work, from its inception, has existed with the blessing of the Clergy Brotherhood and support of many individual clergy, and under the umbrella of the COCC.  The purposes of the OCW are to provide spiritually enriching and educational presentations and activities, to promote Orthodox unity, to provide opportunities for Inter-Orthodox fellowship, and to perform charitable works.

The founder chose women of many ethnic jurisdictions to work with her in establishing the OCW as a totally Pan-Orthodox group.  The Feast of the Meeting/Presentation of Christ in the Temple (February 2/15) was chosen as the Patronal Feast, because the founding meetings were being held (at St. Innocent Church in Redford) at the time this feast was being celebrated, on Old and New Calendars.  Thus, each year an Annual Anniversary Dinner is held on a Sunday afternoon in early February near this Feast Day.

To realize the goals of the OCW, since the very beginning, presentations have been offered for most months of the year on Monday evenings (usually the 3rd Monday) at 7:00 PM, with an annual Summer Retreat, usually at the Holy Dormition Monastery in Rives Junction.  The organization has also offered tours of select churches in the Metropolitan Detroit area, as well as an occasion Saturday Seminar (the first of which being in the Fall of 1993, presented by Matushka Julianna Schmemann, wife of the late Fr. Alexander Schmemann, the renowned Orthodox theologian and former Dean of St. Vladimir Seminary).  All presentations have always been open to men as well as women, and many men have participated from the beginning.

In addition, the organization has happily supported various charitable efforts in our area including FOCUS Detroit, Orthodox Detroit Outreach (ODO) and others.

All women who are members of Orthodox Christian parishes in Metropolitan Detroit are invited to become supporting members and participate in the organization's activities as best as they are able.
